Both of these remedies eliminate P. acne, the bacteria, which are responsible for the infection of acne. By lowering the population of these bacteria and killing them, acne heal more quickly. Such medicines also help to prevent acne from recurring in the future. An example of an anti-microbial remedy is azealic acid, which is known to occur naturally in the skin. Azealic acid is considered to be a good remedy for stopping the abnormal shedding of dead cells, and the recovery of dark spots, which result from acne.

Another very common over-the-counter (OTC) anti-microbial remedy is benzoyl peroxide, which has been used as the key component in most acne treatment remedies. An example of an antibiotic remedy, on the other hand is erythromycin, which is used for a number of problems caused by bacteria within the acne. (Apart from acne, another common problem, which is treated with erythromycin, is sore throat.)

Last but not least, topical retinoids are used to unclog the pores. This remedy is extremely effective in preventing and eliminating blackheads and whiteheads. The problem with retinoids, however, is that they increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Therefore, when using retinoids, it is important to use sun protection so that skin is always covered. The most common side effect of these remedies however is the tendency for the skin to dry up too much, causing skin irritation.
