Acne Photodynamic Treatment
Hard-to-treat acne and acne scar treatment may require “power-level” solutions. A new procedure that treats resistant, hard-to-treat active acne combines light and a special light-activated solution that targets and destroys acne activity. This treatment also diminishes older acne scars, leaving your skin smoother. The procedure is called Photodynamic Therapy. Dr. Taheri is a pioneer in the use of Photodynamic Therapy and his patients show consistent major improvements.
Photodynamic Acne Treatment (PDT) is a process by which a photosensitizing agent (Levulan ) is applied to your skin. A Photosensitizing agent is a special solution applied to the skin that is activated by a specific wavelength of light, which “turns it on.” Levulan has been used extensively for the treatment of a variety of different skin conditions. Levulan is a 20% solution of Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA). ALA is a “natural” product found in all humans throughout the body.
Understanding acne Acne results from the obstruction and inflammation of the sebaceous glands, and it affects 80% of the human population. Acne typically begins in adolescence with hormonal changes. However, there are many older individuals who suffer from “adult acne.” There are different levels of acne ranging from milder comedonal (blackheads and whiteheads) to moderate, pustular, on to severe cystic acne. In many cases, several or all of these levels of acne can be present on an individual simultaneously.

Featured patient discussions on coping with acne
“I have had bouts of acne breakouts since I was a teenager. Currently, I am experiencing a reoccurrence I believe due to premenopause. Whenever I experience hot flashes, I notice breakouts increase. I haven’t found anything over the counter or from the doctor that seems to help, although currently I am trying acupuncture to relieve hot flash symptoms and I am hopeful that will calm my skin down.”

DISEASE ENTITY
Acne rosacea is a chronic acneiform disorder affecting both the skin and the eye. It is a syndrome of undetermined etiology characterized by both vascular and papulopustular components involving the face and occasionally the neck and upper trunk. Clinical findings are usually limited to the sun exposed areas of the face and chest and include mid facial erythema, telangiectasias, papules and pustules, and sebaceous gland hypertrophy. Rosacea is characterized by episodic flushing of affected areas, which may be associated with consumption of alcohol, hot drinks, or spicy foods. During inflammatory episodes, affected areas of the skin, primarily the convexities of the face, develop swelling, papules, and pustules. The skin lesions are notable for the absence of comedones, which distinguishes this disorder from acne vulgaris. Rhinophyma is a late finding.

Anti-Acne Diet
It is no secret that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in sugars and starches can whittle your waistline, but research now suggests it may also reduce breakouts. Eat the right foods and you could see a 20 percent improvement in your complexion, says Cheryl Lee Eberting, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist in Alpine, Utah. Which means that while diet can play a role for some, Eberting says it is not a substitute for a proper skin care regimen or for seeing your dermatologist, who can determine the cause of your acne and prescribe the proper remedies.
So dial your derm and reconfigure your grocery list: Here are the foods researchers believe may help — and hurt — your complexion.

Which are the Best Acne Treatments? It Depends
Im sorry to be the bearer of bad news but its not as simple as just listing the best acne treatments. Thats not because theres no good acne treatments available, quite the opposite in fact, its just that theres a few steps to take before deciding which are the best acne treatments for your acne.
Not everyone has the same acne problem and so the best acne cures for one person may not be the best acne cures for another. Acne attacks different people differently. For some, its just a mild attack which will be managed quite satisfactorily with some simple facial cleansing routines. No more required. No need to search out any acne treatments, certainly no need to investigate the best acne treatments.

What is Acne?
Acne is a general term for pimples and deeper pustules that are clogged pores. If severe enough acne can leave permanent scars.
Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder of the skin’s sebaceous glands and hair follicles that affects about 80% of people between the ages of 12 and 24. During puberty high levels of hormones are produced in both girls and boys. This leads to the production of large quantities of sebum. Sebum is an irritant that can clog the pores and form a pimple which may become infected and form a pustule. Hormones don’t go away after adolescence. Many women still get premenstrual acne from of the release of progesterone after ovulation.
